The Anacardiaceae tree Astronium urundeuva (Fr.All.) Engl. syn. Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr.All. was chosen for research. This species is known in Brazil as "aroeira" and is not only an important hardwood but also a medicinal plant. Due to these qualities, A. urundeuva has become scarce in the Centre-West and adult trees in large populations are hard to find in most areas of the Northeast Region of Brazil. For the Brazilian Government, this species is considered vulnerable. For RBG Kew, the family is among the top ten most important for germplasm conservation in the seed banck. The objective of this research was to study the viability of A. urundeuva seeds when submitted to desiccation, very high and low temperature including liquid nitrogen..., and to define their physiological behaviour in terms of desiccation tolerence.
